DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — The former Navy reservist who gunned down 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard was tossed out of a metro Atlanta nightclub five years ago and cited for disorderly conduct, according to a police report.
Aaron Alexis damaged furnishings inside the club on Chamblee-Tucker Road near Interstate 285 at 1:10 a.m. on Aug. 10, 2008, according to a disorderly conduct citation from DeKalb County police.
The report obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press says Alexis began using profanity repeatedly outside the nightspot after he was thrown out. The citation says he wouldn’t stop swearing, despite being told several times. The name of the club was not in the police report.
Alexis spent a night in jail before bonding out, said DeKalb County police Capt. Steven Fore. He showed up for a court date the month after the citation and the case against him was dismissed in November 2008, according to a clerk with the DeKalb County Recorders Court.
Alexis gave police a New York state ID with an address in Flushing, and Fore said he didn’t know what Alexis was doing in Georgia at the time of the incident.
Alexis, a 34-year-old employee with a defense contractor, used a valid pass to get into the highly secured installation Monday, the FBI said. He was killed in a gun battle with police.
A Buddhist convert who had also had flare-ups of rage, Alexis, a black man who grew up in New York City and whose last known address was in Fort Worth, Texas, complained about the Navy and being a victim of discrimination. He also had run-ins with the law over shootings in 2004 and 2010 in Texas and Seattle.
